The International Criminal Court: Investigating and Trying Individuals Charged with the Gravest Crimes

About the International Criminal Court (ICC)

The International Criminal Court (ICC), also known as the ICCt, is an intergovernmental organization and international tribunal headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands. Established in 2002, the ICC seeks to investigate and prosecute individuals accused of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.

Scope and Jurisdiction

The ICC's jurisdiction extends over four grave crimes: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. To initiate an investigation, the ICC may receive referrals from member states, the United Nations Security Council, or the prosecutor's own investigations. The Court has jurisdiction over individuals, not states, and only investigates and prosecutes cases where national authorities are unable or unwilling to do so effectively.

Celebrating 100 Years of the International Court of Arbitration (ICC)

In 2023, the ICC celebrated 100 years of its Court of Arbitration, the world's leading arbitral institution. Established in 1923, the Court has resolved over 25,000 commercial disputes. It provides a neutral and impartial forum for the settlement of international business disputes, promoting the rule of law and the development of international trade.
